1972... That was a long time ago. A very long time ago as retail businesses go. An extremely long time as audio/video stores go. In that time we have seen many national chainscome and go: Atlantis Sound, The Wiz, Ultimate Electronics and Circuit City to name just a few. And we have seen hundreds more of what are called “trunk slammer” types of audio/video businesses disappear. Trunk slammer businesses are those that operate from the trunk of someone’s car, or have a truck, marked or not, but do not have a retail store nor a location you can find them. They have fancy cards with a name, phone number and email, but no address. When you have a failure, you have nowhere to take your equipment, you can only call and wait, and hope. When you want to audition equipment, you have nowhere to go if your installer is a trunk slammer. You can only audition what he brings.
1972 was a very good year, as that is when Upstairs Audio & Video was founded. We were founded by a student in college, and that founder is still at Upstairs Audio & Video.
Today, energetic as ever. He made the commitment to keep a bricks and mortar business so that you can have a place to audition equipment, a place to seek service, a place that has regular hours so you can ask questions, solve problems, get service. By having a real store, we have showrooms where we not only demonstrate equipment, but where we put equipment together and test for compatibility and best performance, something trunk slammers, and even the big box stores, do not have.
In the 70’s, Columbia had up to 12 audio stores. Today, only one dedicated full time store is left: Upstairs Audio & Video. While many cities lack a store with people that can truly setup a great performing system, Columbia is blessed with having one. While experienced, knowledgeable specialists are disappearing, Columbia still has a place to go. While customer service means 5 minutes with you at a big box store and off to the next customer, Columbia still has a place where the staff will sit down with you at your pleasure and spend as much or little time as you desire.

Walt comes to Upstairs Audio & Video with more than 15 years of experience in interactive web design, graphic design, content development andmultimedia production. He also has experience with graphic design including: layout, information architecture, and online usability, accessibility, Search Engine optimization and is Certified as a 508-Compliancy expert. He is managing advertising and public relations for Upstairs Audio & Video, as well as helping with marketing of national companies that Upstairs Audio & Video is taking on. In addition, he is handling graphic and website design for local companies for the marketing division of Upstairs Audio & Video.
He is 12 years Strong with HTML, XHTML, CSS, DHTML, PHP, MySQL and JavaScript and has been certified as a Webmaster through the University of South Carolina.
Walter is a musician/producer/composer and has been a member of The Root Doctors for 19 years and continues to travel throughout the Southeast with the band. He is also currently a member of Da Throwback Band out of Charlotte, NC lead by Calvin Hunter of Calvin & Friends and Tootie and the Jones bands.
Walter was born in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is originally from Georgetown, SC and has traveled with his family around the country and abroad.
